West Side Story Movie Storyline
The Jets, a gang of Caucasian youngsters, battle the Puerto Rican Sharks for dominance of Manhattan’s West Side’s San Juan Hill in 1957. Officer Krupke and Lieutenant Schrank intervene, reminding the groups that their fight is meaningless because the area is being razed to make room for Lincoln Center. Because the gangs are too arrogant to care, Jet leader Riff offers a fight between them. He asks his friend Tony, who is on probation, for assistance. Tony declines, preferring to make a fresh start with the aid of Valentina, Doc’s general store’s Puerto Rican proprietor. However, Maria is promised to his buddy Chino but wants to be free. Tony and Maria meet and fall in love during a neighborhood dance. Bernardo is enraged by this, and agrees to Riff’s stipulations for a scrap if Tony shows up. Tony expresses his love for Maria, and the two meet on Maria’s fire escape the following day, pledging to see one other again.
