Black as Night Movie Storyline

While looking for cans, a homeless guy called Marvin is assaulted by vampires. Shawna is a teen who lives with her father Steven and older brother Jamal. Denise, her mother, is a heroin addict who lives at the Ombreaux, a housing project that is being demolished to make way for a mixed-use development. Shawna is on her way to see Denise at the Ombreaux when she comes across street preacher Babineaux, who is conducting a demonstration against the Ombreaux’s demolition; Shawna feels the protest is pointless and opts out. Denise asks Shawna for drug money and discloses that she still has a silver locket with images of their family when Shawna arrives at her apartment. Shawna later runs into her crush Chris at the Ombreaux and hears ominous sounds emanating from a boarded-up apartment.

Pedro, Shawna’s closest friend, is a bright student who has been accepted to a prominent Texas school but refuses to go; he argues that he is needed in New Orleans, but Shawna believes he just does not want to be among a lot of white people.

Black as Night Movie Review

The writing by Sherman Payne is intriguing, but it crams much too much into what might have been a short series. Mariette Lee Go’s direction enhances the incoherent script; nevertheless, the tale is squandered by being crammed into the  2 and half hour narrative, making the picture seem underdeveloped and unsatisfying. Moreover, the narrative is packed with a lot of social criticism that isn’t handled effectively and doesn’t come to a logical end. The majority of discoveries or dramatic information flushes are likewise sudden and undeserved, particularly the story line about Shawna’s concerns about being a gloomy girl. It’s a storyline aspect that’s important to her character growth, but one that she will not really come to grips with naturally throughout the movie.

The directors also add a few new twists to vampire legend, such as the ingenious concept that the more pigment a vampire has in its skin, the simpler it is for it to roam about during the day. Shawna has been teased for her dark complexion, but the vampires who attempt to transform her make her feel like a talented queen who might effortlessly become such a day-walker, an honorable position in their culture.
