The Power of the Dog Movie Storyline

During a cattle drive in Montana in 1925, rich ranch-owning brothers Phil and George Burbank encounter widow and inn operator Rose Gordon. Rose’s son Peter is mocked for his lisp and sissy demeanor by the volatile Phil, who was heavily inspired by his late master “Bronco” Henry.

George and Rose married shortly after. While Rose moves into the Burbank ranch home, she uses George’s money to bring her son to university to study medicine and surgery. Phil dislikes her because he believes she married George for his money. His gruff demeanor and insulting demeanor irritate her. George invites his parents and the governor to a dinner party so they may meet Rose and hear her play their new piano. Rose is embarrassed even more when Phil belittles her when she has been unable to play and over some few notes of the “Radetzky March.” She starts to consume alcohol, something she had previously avoided.

The Power of the Dog Movie Review

The film is well-made and well-acted. Those who are whining about New Zealand stepping in for 1925 Montana should get off their high horses. When the locations of Big Little Lies and Nine Perfect Strangers were moved from Australia to the United States, no one protested…

Cumberbatch gives the troubled, closeted Phil enough flesh to make him a sympathetic figure, even if he isn’t loveable. Dunst steals the show as Rose, a newlywed who turns to alcohol when life becomes too much for her. George, played by Plemons, quietly asserts himself, while Smit-McPhee edges perilously near to the dark side.

Campion has twisted the usually masculine western to portray an insightful narrative of human interactions, winning the Silver Lion for Best Direction at the 78th Venice International Film Festival this year. While the discursive pace may take some becoming used it to, particularly for those used to fast-paced films, sticking with this empathically story of love and tragedy is related to the way.
