Rahul made his first-class debut for Karnataka in the 2010–11 season. In the same season, Rahul represented his country in the 2010 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, scoring a total of 143 runs in the tournament. He made his Indian Premier League debut in 2013 for Royal Challengers Bangalore. During the 2013–14 home season, he scored 1,033 first-class runs, the second-highest score of that season.

Rahul scored 185 runs in just 233 balls and in second innings 152 runs Playing for South Zone in the final of the 2014-15 Duleep Trophy against Central Zone, Rahul was named the player of the match and Selected in the Indian Test team against Australia.

Returning home after the Test series, Rahul became Karnataka’s first triple-centurion, scoring 337 runs against Uttar Pradesh. He scored 188 against Tamil Nadu in the 2014-15 Ranji Trophy final and finished the season with an average of 93.11 in the nine matches he played.
