• Punekar came from a poor household and had to work as a maid to make ends meet. She began her career as an artist by performing in several Tamasha troupes on lavanis penned by the well-known poet Bashir Momin Kavathekar.
• She founded her own Tamasha troupe with her sister Lata Punekar, with help from Baba Pathan and Momin Kavathekar, after playing in different Tamasha troupes.
• This new troupe began operations in Kavathe Yamai. However, the venture was unprofitable, and the troupe was forced to close.
