• Hartley began his acting career at the age of 13 at the White Barn Theater in Norwalk, Connecticut. When she was young as a stage actress, she was mentored by Eva Le Gallienne.

• Hartley also worked at the American Shakespeare Festival. Her film career began with an uncredited cameo in the Western From Hell to Texas (1958) starring Dennis Hopper.

• Hartley’s first credible film appearance was in the 1962 Sam Peckinpah western Ride the High Country, opposite Randolph Scott and Joel McCrea. This role of hers earned her a BAFTA nomination.

• In 1977 Hartley starred in the television movie The Last Hurrah, a political drama based on Edwin O’Connor’s novel of the same name. She received her first Emmy Award nomination.

• In 1987, she co-hosted her CBS weekday morning news program The Morning Program with Roland Smith for her ten months.In the 1990s, Hartley went on a revival tour of the mystery drama Deathtrap with Elliot Gould and Doug Wirt.

• The 1990s and 2000s were followed by her numerous television movie roles and guest appearances on television series. These include Homicide, Wrote (1992), Courthouse (1995), Nash on Bridge (2000), and NCIS (2005).

• She made recurring appearances as Sister Mary Daniel in the soap opera ‘One Life to Live’ (1999–2001; 10 episodes) and as Lorna Her Scully in her 6 episodes of ‘Law & Order’: Special Victims Unit (2003–2011).

• From 1995 to her 2015, she hosted her series Wild About Animals, a long-running television documentary that is educational. Hartley made a guest appearance in a 1979 episode of Garner’s television series The Rockford Files.

• Hartley starred in her own women’s show, When I Got To Bethlehem, I Did Too Much, which aired in Los Angeles. In 2014, she returned to the stage as Eleanor of Aquitaine alongside Ian Buchanan’s Henry in James Goldman’s The Lion in Winter for the Colony Theater Company.

• In January 2018, Hartley began a recurring role as Patricia Clarke, the mother of dispatcher Abby Clarke, who has Alzheimer’s disease, on Fox’s first responder drama 9-1-1.
