Rani Bharti is a housewife and the wife of Bihar’s chief minister, Bheema, in this fictitious narrative. Her only concerns are her home and her hubby. She intends to collect her belongings and return to her hometown when her husband resigns as Bihar’s Chief Minister. Her life, however, takes a change when her husband, the Chief Minister of Bihar, is forced to disclose the selection of his successor. While his party members are waiting to hear who has been appointed, he unexpectedly names Rani as his successor. Maharani on Sony Liv is partly based on Rabri Devi’s term as chief minister of Bihar in the 1990s, when Lalu Prasad Yadav was forced to resign because his name was linked to the fodder scandal.

Maharani sheds light on the most combustible and exciting period of Bihar politics, real-life events that most of us are unaware of. It was therefore a narrative that needed to be told, if only to educate millennials about the depths of depravity that formerly characterized Bihar politics. SonyLIV’s latest program is worth watching and recommending only for that reason.

The authors have tweaked the real-life story just enough to turn it into a semi-fictional political drama. However, a quick search on Google reveals that the majority of the events shown in the series are exact duplicates of those that happened in Bihar in the late 1990s. Maharani’s attention to detail is astounding in this regard. Given that Bihari is a difficult accent to imitate, the majority of the performers get their dialects properly.

In the first half of the episodes, the narrative is fast-paced, but it slows down in the second half. Some passages aren’t as powerful as they may be, while others are hampered by a trite soundtrack. The overall immersive narrative, on the other hand, leads the audience to ignore tiny flaws in the story’s telling.
