Based on actual events, The Forgotten Army tells the tale of Indian troops who marched on the city while shouting “Challo Dilli” in an effort to free their country from colonial tyranny. Subhash Chandra Bose served as the commander of the Indian National Army (INA), which was formed from Indian troops who had deserted to the Empire of Japan during World War II. The INA featured the first women’s infantry battalion since the Russian forces of 1917–18. The battle and tale of these warriors, who fought against all difficulties to win India’s freedom, somehow became lost, and they were dubbed “the forgotten army.”

In Kabir Khan’s series, the technical elements like cinematography and editing are competent but not outstanding. You might not need to find other things to do because the tale cuts across time and place, and every time a piece starts to get boring, the reality of our contemporary times will keep you interested as a spectator. The creators have subtly suggested that even though decades may have passed, there are still many battles to be fought in this. It is admirable that Kabir sympathises with the struggle for independence of other countries and that he portrays them not as the other but as one of us.

Azaadi Ke Liye may only have five episodes and each may only be 30 to 35 minutes long, but it nevertheless features substantial combat scenes and numerous actual incidents from the novel. As lead performers, Sunny and Sharwari provide outstanding performances. Also deserving of praise are the foreigners on the sets and in the cast. Nevertheless, it seems like Kabir Khan’s labour of love deserves more.
