• Garland began performing in the variety group The Gum Sisters as a child alongside her two older sisters, and later signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in her teens.

• She has appeared in over 20 of MGM films. Garland was a frequent screen partner of Mickey Rooney and Gene Kelly, and worked regularly with her director and second husband, Vincente Minnelli.

• Other of her starring roles from this period include Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), Harvey Girls (1946), Easter Parade (1948) and Summer Stock (1950).

• In 1950, after her 15 years at MGM, the studio fired her amid a series of personal struggles that prevented her from completing the terms of her contract.

• Her film career was put on hold after that, but two of Garland’s most critically acclaimed roles came later in her career.

• She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for A Star Is Born (1954) and for Best Supporting Actress for The Trial at Nuremberg (1961). She also gave record-breaking concert performances, released eight studio albums, and hosted her own Emmy-nominated television series, The Judy Garland Show (1963–1964).

• At the age of 39, Garland became the youngest and first woman to receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her lifetime achievement in the film industry.
