• Gibson began his acting career at the age of eight, touring at the May Desmond Theater for nine years. He acted in many stage and theater productions.

• Gibson made frequent appearances on Tonight Starring Jack Paar from 1957 to 1962, often reciting his poems.

• In 1962, his appearance coincided with guest presenter Jerry Lewis. Fascinated by Gibson’s actions, Lewis subsequently cast him in The Nutty Professor (1963). After appearing in this film, Gibson’s career took off. This was followed in 1964 by Quilt Manley, a cowboy character who recites poetry on the popular show Beverly Hillbillies.

• Around this time, Gibson appeared in an episode of My Favorite Martian. Gibson appeared on the television show “Laugh-In” for three years, and in 1971 he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award.

• He often played a “poet”, reciting poems with “sharp satirical or political themes”. Gibson emerged from the back of his apartment onstage wearing his Nehru jacket and “hippie” beads and carrying a strangely large artificial flower.

• He bowed hard and said, by Henry Gibson, in a sarcastic American Southern accent, bowed hard again, recited his poem, and went to the back of his apartment.

• Gibson’s routine was so impressive that John Wayne actually performed it once in his own distinctive style:”The sky – by John Wayne. The sky is blue/Grass is green/Get off your ass/Join the Marines!” At this point, Wayne rushed out of the apartment and left the scene. Gibson also regularly appeared in “cocktail party” segments as a Catholic priest sipping tea.

• In 1962, Gibson released a comedy album entitled Alligator on Liberty Records. The album was re-released in 1968 and is now titled by Henry Gibson after his success with Laugh-In. The liner notes continue the origin story of him being a country boy from Fairhope, Alabama. The album failed to reach the Billboard Top 200 on either release.

• His last major roles were as Father O’Neal in the 2005 film Wedding Crashers and as a supporting role as Clarke in the television show Boston Legal.
